About the Artist

Clara Wells (1990) is an artist currently working in Christchurch New Zealand. She works primarily with motion-based media, specifically handdrawn animation, and static drawing.

The work focusses on physical phenomena in both nature and filmmaking and the importance of the artist’s presence in animation. Clara uses traditional animation techniques as well as digital manipulation to create works that are largely method-based, utilising elements of absurdist and surrealist drawing to produce works that swing between frantic, anxiety ridden bombardments and slow, hypnotic morphs.

Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, Clara obtained both her BFA (2014) and MFA (2015-16) through the Ilam School of Fine Arts, University of Canterbury.

Clara is not currently represented by a gallery, so all inquiries can be made direct to the artist via the contact form, here.
